Students in kindergarten through grade 12 participate in activities that are related to this content area. Students in kindergarten through grade six participate in activities that develop and refine gross motor movements, in addition to creating an awareness of healthy habits. Grades 7 and 8 participate in activities that assess and apply health and fitness data to enhance personal wellness. Students in grades 9 through 12 participate in activities that provide an opportunity to evaluate factors that impact health and analyze the role of personal responsibility in maintaining and enhancing wellness.
The Health and Physical Education Department is committed to providing a high quality instructional program that is relevant to all students. Each teacher’s goal is to provide students with a variety of activities that will prepare them for a lifetime of fitness and well-being. Instructional practices take into consideration changing developmental and movement abilities and also seek to develop self-confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills. In terms of Health Education, it is the goal of the teachers to deliver instruction that will have a strong impact on promoting healthy young adults. Instructional practices will focus on developing critical thinking skills to enable students to make informed decisions that encourage healthy lifestyles.
As health and physical educators, our goal is to provide a safe, supportive, and caring environment where students will achieve success. Staff members in this department are experienced, bringing forth a wealth of subject area knowledge and a strong pedagogy allowing the best educational experiences for our students. During the 2015-2016 school year, our department members will work collaboratively to develop common assessments and effective instructional strategies.
Parents and community members play an integral role in the education of our students. Staff members are diligent in disseminating information about content-specific activities through class requirements, teacher web sites, and email contact. Parents are encouraged to communicate regularly with the health and physical education department regarding concerns and student achievement.
